How do e-cigarettes affect oral health? Latest research provides answers

Bad breath, yellow teeth, bleeding gums, oral cancer… While Chinese smokers are still suffering from various oral problems caused by cigarettes, German smokers have taken the lead in finding ways to improve them. A recent paper published in the authoritative medical journal “Clinical Oral Investigations” points out that e-cigarettes are far less harmful to periodontal health than cigarettes, and smokers can effectively reduce the harm by switching to e-cigarettes.

This is a study initiated by the University of Mainz in Germany, which analyzed more than 900 related papers from around the world in the past 16 years. The results showed that e-cigarettes had significantly less adverse effects than cigarettes on every key indicator reflecting periodontal health.

Take the core indicator BoP as an example: a positive BoP means suffering from gingivitis or periodontal disease. The study found that e-cigarette users had a 33% lower chance of being positive for BoP than smokers. “More than 4,000 chemicals that cause disease in cigarettes are produced during tobacco burning. E-cigarettes do not contain the combustion process, so they can reduce the harm of cigarettes by 95%.” The author explained in the paper.

In the oral cavity, the tar produced by burning cigarettes can cause dental plaque, and the released benzene and cadmium can cause the loss of vitamins and calcium, accelerate bone loss and bone degeneration, and produce more than 60 other carcinogens that can cause various inflammations and even Oral Cancer. In contrast, the relevant indices of e-cigarette users are similar to those of non-smokers, indicating that e-cigarettes hardly harm periodontal health.

In fact, not only Germany, but also the latest research in China has confirmed this. According to the “Report on Characteristics and Public Health Impact of Chinese E-cigarette Users (2023)” released in September 2023, nearly 70% of smokers said that their health conditions have improved after switching to e-cigarettes. Among them, 91.2% of people have significantly improved their breath problems, and more than 80% of people have significantly improved symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, and yellow teeth.

“Forty million people worldwide suffer from periodontal disease due to cigarettes, and the oral hygiene of e-cigarette users is much better than that of smokers. Therefore, we can conclude that smokers switching to e-cigarettes is more beneficial to periodontal health. choice,” the authors wrote in the paper.
