“The Lancet” and the US CDC jointly recognized the potential of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation

Recently, a paper published in the authoritative international journal “The Lancet Regional Health” (The Lancet Regional Health) pointed out that e-cigarettes have played an effective role in reducing the smoking rate in the United States (number of cigarette users/total number*100%). The use rate of e-cigarettes is rising, and the use rate of cigarettes in the United States is decreasing year by year.

A recent report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) came to the same conclusion. The report confirms that from 2020 to 2021, the use rate of e-cigarettes will rise from 3.7% to 4.5%, while the use rate of cigarettes in the United States will drop from 12.5% to 11.5%. U.S. adult smoking rates have fallen to their lowest point in nearly 60 years.

The study, led by the Eastern Virginia School of Medicine in the United States, conducted a four-year follow-up survey of more than 50,000 American adults and found that the use of e-cigarettes is “related to smoking cessation behavior.” The official website of the World Health Organization expresses “quit smoking” as “quit tobacco”, that is, quitting tobacco, because the main hazard of cigarettes-the 69 carcinogens are almost all produced in the combustion of tobacco. Studies have shown that many e-cigarette users were former smokers and chose to switch to e-cigarettes without the tobacco combustion process because they wanted to quit smoking.

The effectiveness of e-cigarettes in assisting smoking cessation has been confirmed by a large number of studies. High-quality evidence from international authoritative medical organizations such as Cochrane shows that e-cigarettes can be used to quit smoking, and the effect is better than nicotine replacement therapy. In December 2021, a paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association pointed out that the success rate of smokers quitting smoking with the help of e-cigarettes is 8 times higher than that of ordinary smokers.

However, not every smoker can realize the positive effect of e-cigarettes. Studies have shown that the choice of smokers is directly related to cognition. For example, some smokers do not understand the relevant knowledge and will relapse to smoking cigarettes after using e-cigarettes, which is more harmful. A study published in the “Journal of the American Medical Association” in February 2022 has confirmed that when e-cigarette users start to use cigarettes again, the concentration of carcinogen metabolites in urine can increase by up to 621%.

“We should improve people’s correct understanding of e-cigarettes, especially to prevent smokers from re-smoking cigarettes, which is very important.” The author stated in the research paper that research on “cigarette-vapor” usage habits should be strengthened to find the driving force. Potential factors for smokers to make changes, providing more evidence support for public health policy planning.
