UK e-cigarette use hits record high

Recently, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) released the latest survey results on the use of e-cigarettes among adults in the UK. The survey found that the current e-cigarette usage rate in the UK reaches 9.1%, the highest level in history.

There are approximately 4.7 million adults in the UK who use e-cigarettes, of whom approximately 2.7 million have switched from cigarette use to e-cigarettes, approximately 1.7 million people use e-cigarettes while also using cigarettes, and approximately 320,000 e-cigarettes have never used cigarettes. Regarding the reasons for using e-cigarettes, 31% of the respondents said they wanted to change the habit of using cigarettes, 14% said they liked using e-cigarettes, and 12% said they wanted to save money. Respondents who still smoke said the main reason for using e-cigarettes was to reduce the amount of cigarettes they smoke. Among the respondents who have never used cigarettes, 39% said that the reason for using e-cigarettes is to enjoy the experience.

In the UK, the most common type of e-cigarette is refillable, with 50% of e-cigarette users saying they mainly use this product. Disposable e-cigarettes will become more popular in 2023 compared to 2021 and 2022. In 2021 and 2022, the UK disposable e-cigarette usage rates are 2.3% and 15% respectively, while in 2023 it is estimated to reach 31%. Among people aged 18 to 24, the use of disposable e-cigarettes has increased rapidly, with 57% of e-cigarette users in this age group mainly using disposable e-cigarettes.
